The owner claims that I have broken something in the car. What should I do?
During the time you rent the car, you are responsible for all that happens to the car. The best way to ensure that there would be no undue claim for the damages later on is to prepare accurate paper of delivery and receipt. If the car will be still damaged (etc.) during the rental period, you have to agree on the reimbursement of damage with the car owner.
